Laurel Hill Central - Lorton, VA
This Master Plan proposes a diverse mix of uses for a portion of the former Maximum Security Prison Facility in Lorton, Virginia. Programmed elements include; a Junior College campus with adaptive reuse dormitories and classrooms, two and three story apartment/condominium buildings, townhomes; the adaptive reuse of the prison power plant into a restaurant, historical residence renovation, existing baseball field and bleacher renovation, and the creation of retail and office space. The major challenges confronted by the design team included balancing the adaptive reuse with new construction while maintaining the historical character of the site, balancing future tenants and infrastructure with fee simple housing, integrating vehicular circulation and parking while organizing the site for pedestrian circulation, and providing pedestrian linkages to an existing public trail.
