The conversion of the historic Woodholme estate
into a detached home, residential community, involved the careful restoration
of the estate home and grounds, centrally located within the site. The original
design for the grounds was completed by Thomas Sears, a Philadelphia-based landscape
architect in 1921. STUDIO39 was asked to assess the current state of the site,
and establish which improvements were necessary to restore the grounds to their
historical form. Additionally, these original spaces needed to be adaptively
redesigned to serve as community gathering and educational gardens for the surrounding
neighborhood. The proposed plan includes complete restoration of the perennial
garden including botanical labeling of the original species, a butterfly garden,
restored pool, and community gathering area with period site furnishing and lighting.
