Workhouse Arts Center Celebrates its Grand Opening

The Workhouse Arts Center at Lorton celebrated its grand opening September 19th – 27th of 2008. The Center, located on the former site of the Lorton Prison complex is a 40 acre arts campus, featuring, artist residences, gallery space, performance venues, restaurants, recreational facilities and educational classrooms. STUDIO39 was active in the master planning of the overall campus as well as the site design of individual spaces. Highlights of the project included the use of L.I.D. (Low Impact Design) techniques and the adaptive reuse of existing prison structures.

The Workhouse Arts Center at Lorton is intended to be a premier destination for arts in the Washington Metropolitan Area. The grand opening celebration included performances by the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic and singer and actress Barbara Cook, as well as exhibit openings and fireworks displays.
